Rest When You Need To

Fact :

Your body often knows your limits before you do.

Even though we are all smart enough to know what is and is not healthy, sometimes it can be easy to lose track of how we are taking care of ourselves – especially during the holidays.

As we approach the season of winter and the busyness that accompanies it, make sure that you are filling your virtual tank with healthy resources that will fuel your days – take vitamins, make yourself eat at least one good meal a day, go for a walk or step outside for fresh air, continue to read and learn, accept help as it is offered, & rest.

If you find yourself awake during restless nights, don’t stress.

Sometimes when we aren’t able to sleep well, we start to worry about not sleeping, which just adds to our sleeplessness.

During long nights, remind yourself that just lying in a warm and comfortable bed or on your recliner with a cozy blanket is providing your body with rest.

Accept and embrace rest in whatever ways it comes – take slow hot showers or baths, listen to music, just sit and sip coffee and do a whole lot of nothing – whatever makes you feel at ease and allows you to relax.

Even though it can be tempting to drink alcohol or use drugs to achieve regular moments of ease, remind yourself that your body will have to recover from these altering substances, and that their effects will wear off with time and can possibly hurt you or those around you if used long-term.

Instead, look for nourishing and healthy ways of finding rest.

The more that you pour healthy choices into your heart, mind, and body and seek rest in the ways that come naturally to you, the more easily you will be able to deal with illness or rough days.
